To finish our series on food carving, I'm going to show you my watermelon basket. It's really fun to make and, unlike many food carving projects out there, it actually has a practical use - you use it to store watermelon pieces in it! Or you could melon-ball a variety of melons, so that you would have a colourful assortment in your fruit salad bowl.
Basically all you do is cut out a zig-zag line all along the outside of the watermelon, and make a handle, using the same technique.
Here's a great video, showing you how to make a basket similar to mine.
I zig-zagged the handle as well, but I think it actually looks better the way he did it. Also, I carved a mini watermelon, so if you don't feel ready to tackle a full sized watermelon, you could try a smaller one instead.
You could also have some fun and carve out eyeballs like the ones I did below!

Then put them on your basket to make a watermelon basket monster!
This is a great idea for the summertime, and a really impressive way to make a fruit salad! Though the apple bird and cucumber shark were fun to make as well, I think that this is the only carving project I'll actually do again.
Happy Carving!
